At The Bulmershe School, we believe that education goes beyond the classroom—it’s about fostering a supportive and caring environment where every student can thrive. One of the most unique and cherished members of our school community is Buddy, our friendly therapy dog. Recently, we celebrated Buddy’s birthday, giving students and staff the perfect opportunity to show their appreciation for all the joy and comfort he brings to our school every day.

Who is Buddy?

Buddy is The Bulmershe School’s very own therapy dog, and he plays a key role in supporting the well-being of our students. His calming presence and friendly nature make him an essential part of school life, offering emotional support, stress relief and a sense of comfort to students who need it most. Whether he’s greeting students in the corridors, sitting in on reading sessions, or providing reassurance to those feeling anxious, Buddy is always there with a wagging tail and a warm heart.

The Benefits of Therapy Dogs in Schools

Therapy dogs like Buddy have been shown to provide a wide range of benefits for students of all ages. Scientific research suggests that interacting with a well-trained school dog can:

  • Reduce stress and anxiety – Petting or spending time with a dog helps to lower cortisol levels and promote relaxation.
  • Improve student focus and motivation – Having a therapy dog around can create a positive and encouraging learning environment.
  • Enhance emotional well-being – Students who may be feeling overwhelmed, upset, or nervous can find comfort in Buddy’s presence.
  • Encourage social interaction – Therapy dogs can help break down social barriers, allowing students to feel more connected to their peers and teachers.
  • Support students with additional needs – For students who experience anxiety, neurodiverse conditions, or other challenges, a therapy dog can offer vital reassurance and stability.

What Does Buddy Get Up To?

Buddy is involved in a variety of activities across the school, including:

  • One-to-One Support: Buddy helps students who may be feeling anxious or overwhelmed by providing a calming presence.
  • Reading Sessions: Some students find reading aloud daunting. Buddy sits with them during reading sessions, helping to build confidence.
  • Breaktime Walks: Students and staff love taking Buddy for a walk during breaks, which provides a moment of relaxation and fresh air.
  • Exam Stress Support: During exam season, Buddy plays a crucial role in helping students manage stress and stay calm.

A School That Cares

At The Bulmershe School, we prioritise student well-being, and Buddy is just one of the many ways we support our students beyond academics. From dedicated pastoral teams to mental health initiatives and well-being activities, we ensure that every child feels valued, supported, and confident to achieve their best.

Come and Meet Buddy!

If you’re considering The Bulmershe School for your child, Buddy will be a key member at our Open Evening event in September, and he will be overjoyed to meet you!
