The Bulmershe School Science Department is large and dynamic. We put the students at the centre of all we do enabling them to take responsibility for their achievements. We offer a range of courses, from year 7 to A-level, to suit the needs of our students and our long experience in delivering these courses means that every student can be successful.
The Science Department is rightfully proud of the success of its students which has been sustained over many years with many students going on to study Science subjects at universities.
The Bulmershe School’s Science curriculum aims to ensure that all pupils:
- realise personal empowerment by teaching pupils to comprehend the world around them, by developing skills that allow them to deal critically and creatively with local, national and global issues, and encourage them to take an active role in transformation of their world
- develop the cultural transmission of scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics, and develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them. Science is taught as a way of understanding and comprehending the world around us
- are prepared for democratic citizenship by equipping them with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future, enabling them to make informed decisions and contribute positively to society
- develop the foundation knowledge, skills, and enthusiasm to prepare them for future curricula, further scientific study and/or future employment. We operate a spiral curriculum (three years in Key Stage 3 and two years in Key Stage 4) where knowledge and skills are developed in more detail each time that students engage with that area of study
- develop in confidence in their ability to become independent learners, confident in their skills and able to apply their knowledge effectively

The Science Department offer a full range of extra curricular activities.
Within School we hold a Science Club that meets regularly. We have taken students to visit local Primary schools where they are given a chance to share their enthusiasm and knowledge. Year 5 students from local primary schools in invited into school to participate in “taster” fishbowl sessions and stand alone Science sessions after school throughout the Year. Bulmershe school has a partnership with AWE mentors. Selected students in Key Stage 4 and 5 will be invited to work with AWE mentors throughout the academic year.
KS4 students have had the opportunity to attend Science Live an event where they have the chance to listen to some of the country’s top scientists.
Our students have also attended a wide range of courses and competitions outside school.
