We are thrilled to announce that our Communication and Performing Arts Team has secured the rights for this year's whole-school show: Heathers: The Musical - Teen Edition. Following the success of The Addams Family, we are eager to bring this popular contemporary musical to our stage. Based on the 1989 film, this energetic story features dynamic choreography and memorable songs while exploring themes of identity, belonging and standing up for what is right.

Before diving into the details, we would like to gently note for our families that while this is the adapted Teen Edition, the show still touches on mature themes including peer pressure and social exclusion. We believe handling these topics in a supportive environment helps nurture thoughtful conversations among our young people.

Getting Behind the Scenes and On Stage

Heathers follows Veronica Sawyer, an ordinary teenager whose life changes when she is welcomed into the popular clique at Westerberg High. Caught between the desire to fit in and her personal values, Veronica has to navigate the complexities of teenage friendships. The show offers a wide range of roles for performers across all year groups, from primary principal parts to a large, energetic ensemble of singers, dancers and actors.

A school production is about much more than just the actors under the spotlights. We are equally excited to recruit students to work behind the scenes in technical theatre, stage management, lighting, sound, costume, props and marketing. Whether a student wants to perform or help run the production from the technical desk, there is a place for everyone in this project. To help students prepare for September auditions, Mr Hood and the team have launched a dedicated Google Classroom where pupils can access script guidance and character profiles using the code q3w7zrbi.

Developing Confidence and Character Through Theatre

Taking part in a large-scale musical has a profound impact on student wellbeing and self-esteem. Pushing past stage fright to perform a solo or working under pressure to manage backstage lighting helps young people discover strengths they never knew they had. The shared goal of mounting a production builds incredible bonds across different year groups, as older pupils mentor younger cast members through long rehearsals.

These experiences allow students to develop practical skills such as time management, public speaking and collaboration. Watching a shy Year 7 student step onto the stage and find their voice is one of the most rewarding aspects of our work. The pride and sense of achievement our pupils feel when the curtains open stays with them long after the final applause.

Creative Expression within The Bulmershe School Community

Our annual musical is a cornerstone of the Bulmershe way, reflecting our belief that education extends far beyond exam results. We work hard to create an inclusive environment where creative arts thrive alongside academic study. Our secondary school transition programme encourages new Year 7 pupils to get involved with extra-curricular clubs right from their very first term. Joining a school show gives younger students an immediate sense of belonging, helping them make friends across different year groups and feel fully integrated into The Bulmershe School community.
