World Book Day is always a highlight in the Bulmershe calendar, and this year was no exception! Across the school, staff and students embraced the joy of reading with creativity, enthusiasm and a touch of magic. From incredible costumes to interactive workshops and a Hogwarts-inspired library, the day was packed with activities designed to celebrate the power of books and storytelling.

Why We Celebrate World Book Day at Bulmershe

At Bulmershe, we know that literacy is the foundation of success. Reading not only builds knowledge but also develops communication skills, creativity and confidence. Our commitment to literacy is embedded in everything we do, from our teaching approach to the way we encourage reading for pleasure. World Book Day is a fantastic opportunity to reinforce this message in a fun and engaging way, helping students discover new books, authors and ideas.

A Visit from a Renowned Manga Artist

Manga Workshop5

We were thrilled to welcome Sonia Leong, a renowned Manga artist, to Bulmershe on Wednesday. Sonia delivered four fascinating workshops in the library, teaching students about the world of Manga, from its origins to the process of illustrating and developing a book. She led step-by-step tutorials on how to draw Manga characters, with students eagerly following along in their notepads. Many were surprised at their own artistic talents! To top it off, students had the chance to purchase Sonia’s books to take home and continue their artistic journey.

Tutor Room Door Decorating Competition

Doors 7Our students got creative in a whole new way with a Tutor Room Door Decorating Competition! Each tutor group transformed their door to celebrate their favourite book, with designs ranging from classic literature to modern bestsellers. The results were fantastic, with Heads of Year judging the most imaginative entries. The colourful doors added an extra buzz to the school corridors!

Hogwarts Comes to Bulmershe!

CalilligraphyIn an overnight transformation, Miss Marr turned the library into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry! Floating candles, interactive spell-writing stations, and even a game of Wizard Chess made the library a magical escape for the day. The ever-popular Harry Potter photo booth was a huge hit—although students had to wait in line behind the teachers who were just as excited to get their pictures taken!

A World Book Day Party to Remember

To finish the day in style, we hosted a World Book Day party in the library, where students were invited to dress up, enjoy drinks and snacks, and dance to their favourite tunes. It was a brilliant way to celebrate the joy of books and the impact they have on our lives.

World Book Day at Bulmershe was a fantastic success, and we are so proud of the enthusiasm shown by our students and staff. Reading is at the heart of learning, and it’s wonderful to see our school community coming together to celebrate it in such a fun and creative way.
